Music Gig: Bleached Wail, sMelt

Hailing from Stoke-on-Trent, these three life-long friends have grown up listening to everything from the jazz guitar stylings of Django Reinhardt to the Strokes and Hendrix. As they mature together as a band, these influences have collided together to make music that will soothe you... right before it spits in your face. This mix of sweet melodies and abrasive, urgent playing make a band that stand out from the crowd in this age of synthesized nonsense.

sMelt formed in 2007/8 and create a multi layered punk/grunge sound that has shocked audiences. Formed from the ashes of Passover, No Big Feat and the infamous Toilet Fish.

Music Gig: Swim into Scarlet, Hooker, sMelt

Known for their intimate live performances and their unique fusion of mathrock riffs with synthy-dance vibe, Nantwich band ‘Swim into Scarlet’ have quickly drawn attention to themselves for their experimental indie dance persona.

Hooker. Gloriously brash Manchester-based femme-punk outfit. Creating sounds that oscillate between delicate and bruised, and fiercely raw and dynamic, (hooker) are emotive, dirty, beautiful.

Peter Saville – Will respond to pre submitted questions on design and the designers art.

Since 1977, the designer Peter Saville has been the author of a body of work described by the artist Michael Bracewell as ‘entirely free-floating, unconnected to either product or market’. He characterises the ultimate in visual coolness and ‘sepulchral stillness’. His earliest public work was the packaging and promotion of Factory Records and this work helped establish his commitment to high aesthetic minimalism. Peter has agreed to visit Macclesfield as part of his support for the festival programme and to the work of Macclesfield College.

Pattern in architecture: Tutored photography of Joy Division’s Macclesfield

Walking photography tour of Joy Division places of interest. Based on Anton Corbijn and Kevin Cummins’ photography of the band, the tour will focus on pattern found in industrial architecture. Led by a professional photographer participants will be able to get a better understanding of manual settings on their digital camera and produce industrial architectural shots that echo iconic Joy Division portraiture. At the same time they will learn about Macclesfield’s contribution to Joy Division's history.

Pattern in architecture: Screenprinting workshop

Screen printing workshop at Heritage Centre. Based on Anton Corbijn and Kevin Commins’ photography of the band, the workshop will enable participants to make screen printing templates based on architectural and geometric detail. Those who came to the morning workshop can use their photographs as a starting point; spare images will be available for newcomers (and we can invite people to bring images with them). Having used the images to make designs and cut their screens, participants will transfer their work onto a bag or t-shirt (provided); or can bring their own items to print onto.

Shirt Hack

A short course in creative fashion. This two day course takes the band’s image as its starting point. The members of Joy Division may have been no fashion icons, but their regular ‘uniform’ of shirts, tailored pants and sharp ties says their look was no accident either. This short course extends that emphasis of tailoring to explore how shirts can be constructed, reconstructed and decorated to show individuality. We’ll provide a stash of shirts, textiles equipment and the support of professional printers, fashion designers and textile artists. We’ll also take a look at some of the Silk Museum’s own shirt related items for extra inspiration.

By the end of the course you’ll have hacked, constructed, stitched, printed and adorned your piece into the perfectly fitted and personalised shirt or perhaps a bag, skirt or dress. All materials provided, though you’re welcome to bring your own extra bits too.

Heritage Centre, Roe Street, Macclesfield SK11 6TJ.

Zine Making workshop

If you’re a fan of music, Joy Division, art or design come and find out how to create and publish your own handmade magazine. Black and white zine making using basic techniques was a big feature of music in the late 1970s / early 1980s and is big news in art and design worlds right now. Using ideas based on Joy Division based as a starting point, we’ll help you do everything to create, illustrate and fold your own handmade magazine.

Ideal for bands who want to promote their work, art or design students, and arts and craft dabblers. We’ll provide everything you need, but feel free to bring any extra images, doodles, quotes or lyrics and special papers along that you’d like to use.

The theme of your zine will be up to you…
